Astronomy Night at the Everglades Youth Camp, Corbett Wildlife Management Area (May 1, 2008)

Ninth grade students studying astronomy and environmental science will be participating in an overnight stay at the Everglades Youth Camp. Members of the Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches are welcome to attend and help the students find constellations and deep sky objects. This experience can be the catalyst of further interest into the fields of astronomical and physical sciences. Astronomy sessions are scheduled to begin at 8:15 pm through 9:30 pm. Participating club members are welcome to stay after 9:30, or to participate in the night hikes. For more information contact Shawn McCall, Forest Hill Community High School (561)540-2484 Monday - Friday until 3:30 pm.

Monthly Business Meeting (May 7, 2008)

The meeting will be held in the Motorola Science Theater at the South Florida Science Museum, located on Dreher Trail just north of the Dreher Park Zoo. The business portion of the meeting commences at 7:30 PM and lasts for approximately 45 minutes. We then hold a short intermission, followed by a 45 minute presentation. The meetings are adjourned and we are out of the building by 9:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.

National Astronomy Day (May 10, 2008)

The event will run from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm at the South Florida Science Museum, and will include talks, solar viewing, a keynote presentation, planetarium and laser shows, and night sky viewing. Observing is with weather permitting, of course.

Saturday Night Viewing at Jonathan Dickinson State Park (May 24, 2008)

All are invited to attend. Meeting time is 6:30 PM at the Wendy's restaurant in Tequesta. After dinner, everyone present will depart for the park at 7:30 PM. Be sure to bring an adequate supply of mosquito repellent. Contact Gerry Niksch for additional information.

Area 51 (Big Cypress National Preserve in Central South Florida - 26° 8' 30" North :: 80° 52' 40" West) (to be posted soon)

Area 51 is a primitive viewing site located in one of the darkest places remaining in South Florida. We set up our telescopes at the end of the line on a shell rock road along side a drainage canal. There is no electricity, and there are no facilities of any kind. In fact, the only thing the site has to offer is an unobstructed view of extraordinarily dark skies.
