Light Pollution in South Florida

  Orion Under Dark Skies

  Orion From Suburban WPB

The above photos of the familiar constellation ORION show, in a most dramatic way, the effect that light pollution has on our observing of the night sky. The first shot was taken at the Winter Star Party in the Florida Keys, using a normal 50 mm SLR camera, at f/2.8, piggybacked on an SCT with clock drive. Exposure was about 4 minutes using Kodak GOLD 800 ASA print film. The Rosette Nebula, nebulosity around the Horsehead Nebula, and Barnard's Loop are clearly visible, plus HUNDREDS of stars! The second shot was taken at my "moderately light polluted" home in suburban West Palm Beach, Florida, with EXACTLY the same setup!! An amazing difference.
